Your ACEO is an Asset, Not a Sale
Most artists treat the sale as the end. Ship the card, collect the payment, move on. That cycle produces income but builds nothing.
The moment you sign an original, you have created an asset. You hold the copyright. You can reproduce it at any scale, in any format, indefinitely. The original is the master. Most artists never use it as one.
That small card is a template. Treat it like one.
What You Can Forge From the Original
Numbered Editions
Prints at the exact 2.5"x3.5" scale, numbered on the back. Sell 10 or 50. Each numbered copy is its own sale.
Open Edition Prints
No ceiling on the run. Lower price, higher volume. Builds audience and cash without the overhead of scarcity management.
Digital Downloads
Sell the high resolution file for the meager dollars. Zero shipping. Zero paper. Nothing but the pure margin.
Stickers and Bookmarks
The same artwork on a different format. Low production cost. Impulse price point. Good for craft fairs and Etsy.
Greeting Cards
Art folded onto heavy stock with a blank interior. Sells year-round and spikes during holidays.
Large-Format Prints
Scale the original to 8x10. Different price point, different buyer. Some collectors want the art on a wall, not in a binder.
The Franchise Approach
Mo Willems started with a sketch of a pigeon. That sketch became a book, which became a series, which became a franchise. The original drawings now sell for thousands.
The original never stops generating value. Every book and stuffed animal points back to it and increases its worth. A single ACEO works the exact same way at a smaller scale.
The Next Step
Review the last five original ACEOs you shipped. Run this checklist:
- Did I scan the card at 600dpi before shipping it?
- Have I listed prints or digital downloads of the artwork?
- Did I record the sale price to track the value over time?
If the answer is no to any of these, you are leaving money on the table. Scan every original before it ships. Pick your best recent work, make a limited edition print run, and list it.
The original is not the product. It is the master file. Everything else is downstream.
